Ummeh Islam (She/Her/Hers) is working towards her MS in Mental Health Counseling degree through Thomas Jefferson’s community trauma counseling program since she graduated with a BA in Psychology from the University of Delaware. Ummeh comes from a first-generation Bangladeshi immigrant family, allowing her to expand her multicultural perspective and become a member of the Muslim and Asian American communities. These experiences have helped influence Ummeh’s scope of practice and how she prioritizes cultural competence, safety, and acceptance in her sessions.

“Having worked closely with marginalized communities and making social justice the center of my work, I know the importance of justice-oriented therapy that is trauma focused. It is important, that your care accounts for systematic barriers that you may face, and you feel safe in the counseling space.  I believe in the importance of building human connection to support your healing process specific to your needs.”

Before her clinical experience, she spent several years volunteering with her local Muslim youth group, several other community organizations, and activism spaces. Working within the community has shaped how social justice, advocacy, and decolonization are central to Ummeh’s work as a future clinician. She believes mental health care should be accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive. Ummeh approaches therapy through a person-centered lens, integrating trauma-informed care, mindfulness practices, and strength-based interventions tailored to each client’s unique cultural needs. With her experience in multicultural environments and exposure to different therapeutic settings, she strives to create an open and affirming space where clients feel heard, valued, and empowered.

Her drive to become a licensed psychologist is fueled by a commitment to increasing access to quality mental health care, addressing systemic barriers, and supporting individuals who have faced adversity. Outside of her professional and academic endeavors, Ummeh is passionate about social justice, traveling, learning new languages, and engaging in creative outlets like fashion.

Ummeh’s typical fee is $95 for individual therapy (53 min); She can work on a flexible sliding scale if needed. Review our Frequently Asked Questions for information on our internship program.
