This workshop focuses on the importance of thoughtful suicide assessment throughout the process of trauma treatment. Suicide and adversity are closely related. Trauma survivors have much higher rates of suicide attempts than others. Suicide is often an attempt to escape the pain and suffering associated with past adversity and current traumatic stress or grief. The process of engaging clients in trauma therapy while continuously assessing for suicidality is delicate but essential. As we assist clients in addressing the wounds of past adversity, we must be thoughtful in helping to keep them within their window of tolerance. This workshop will explore this balance, draw connections between trauma and suicide, and discuss the basics of suicide assessment.

Learning Objectives:

1. Differentiate between suicidal thoughts, plans, and intentions
2. Describe one connection between trauma and suicide
3. Explain how the process of engaging in trauma therapy could increase or decrease suicidality

The experiential learning structures include demonstrations of experiential processes which often include (optional) personal disclosures from participants. While personal growth is often a byproduct of experiential learning, the primary purpose of this workshop is training. If you are seeking a workshop for personal growth or seeking a professional training event that is entirely didactic (lecture/powerpoint), this is probably not the best workshop for you.

About Dr. Scott Giacomucci

Dr. Scott Giacomucci, DSW, LCSW, BCD, CGP, FAAETS, TEP.(he, him, his) is the Director, Founder, & Owner of the Phoenix Center for Experiential Trauma Therapy. He provides clinical services at the center as well as supervision, consultation, training, and organizational leadership. Scott’s work has been internationally recognized and he is the recipient of various awards. He frequently presents training workshops at local, national, and international events and has published various articles on using experiential methods (especially sociometry, psychodrama, and group work) in clinical, educational, community, and organizational settings.
