Experiential Work with Defenses in Trauma and Addiction Treatment

Cost: $80 ($50 student rate) –
This workshop presents an overview of defense mechanisms as they relate to addiction and trauma treatment. Psychodynamic theory of defense mechanisms will be presented with emphasis on the similarities and differences between defenses related to addiction and trauma. The neurobiology of trauma will be revisited including an overview of Polyvagal Theory’s conceptualization of the fight, flight, and freeze responses to danger. Multiple uses of sociometric group processes to explore defense mechanisms within a group counseling context will be demonstrated. The use of psychodramatic techniques to explore and transform defenses with clients will be presented.

1. Describe the function of psychological defense mechanism
2. Explain one use of sociometry in group work around defenses
3. Identify one psychodrama technique useful for work with defenses

Participants at these workshops can receive credit towards certifications through the American Board of Examiners in Sociometry, Psychodrama, and Group Psychotherapy* as well as the International Society of Experiential Professionals (CP, CET, and CES). *As a Practitioner Applicant for Trainer, Scott can provide 160 of the required 780 training hours towards CP certification for psychodrama.
